Below is a list of websites where free eBooks can be downloaded for various e-readers.  Keep in mind that mostly classic literature, books published before 1923 and self-published books are offered as free eBooks.  In addition to free books, many of these sites also have inexpensive eBooks for sale.

U Penn Digital Library – Over 1 million free eBooks with criteria being that the book must be carried by a major library.

  Amazon – In the search bar type “free Kindle books”.

Smashwords provides an opportunity to discover new Indie authors in all categories and genres of the written word.  Click “Free” under the price category.

Kobo Books – One million free eBooks.  Click “e-Books” then “FREE EBOOKS” for classics and current authors.

Internet Archive – This site contains “a wide range of fiction, popular books, children’s books, historical texts and academic books”.  It also contains audio books, computer software, music, moving images and more.

Google Play – Type “free books” into the search bar.  Along with classics and pre-1923 books, Google Books also has Special Free Previews.  To read offline, download the Google Play Books app from the Chrome web browser.

 Unbound – Scroll down to the “Free Fridays” post.   Double-check that the book is indeed free before downloading.  A credit card number is required in order to register with Barnes & Noble.
