Brief History

Originally, Sparta residents were served by the Monday Club Library. However, in February of 1944 the Sparta Public Library opened in two small rooms in the Sparta city building on South Market Street, later on two more rooms were added to the library. In 1958 Board member Anna W. Brown died and gave her home on West Main Street to the city to be used for a library. The move to that location was made in April of 1960. In 1996 the Sparta Public Library moved to its current location, on West Broadway.
